Bishop Hendricken Guidance & Counseling Newsletter

November, 2017

Counseling Services

The close of first quarter is an ideal time for students step back, take a look at their accomplishments and assess areas where improvement is needed. School counselors are here to help with this process! The goals and objectives of the Counseling Department are directed toward helping students grow in their awareness of their individual potentials in the academic, social and career arenas. While counselors call students down on a rotating basis, we encourage students to make appointments with their counselors as needed. Homeroom and study periods are the best times for students to schedule appointments. Counselors are also available after school. This is especially helpful for our Academy students and Peer Mentors.

PSAT Scores

PSAT scores will be available to all Rhode Island students on December 13. Scores are directly emailed from the College Board to the email address that students designated on test day. Counselors will be visiting classrooms after midterm exams to discuss scores and review best practices for score improvement.

Midterm Exams

On December 15, counselors will conduct an Exam Preparation Seminar during long period for grades 8, 9, and 10. All students should be organizing study materials including notes, tests and quizzes in preparation for midterm exams. Reviewing all errors on tests and quizzes and addressing any areas of difficulty with teachers are excellent practices to prepare for exams. Setting some time aside over Christmas vacation to prepare for exams is a terrific way to get ahead and manage exam related stress. Ideally, students should be reviewing, rather than learning, material during exam week.

College Information

Juniors

After Christmas Vacation, parents of Juniors will be receiving an invitation from the Counseling Department to attend Junior College Planning Information Night. This important event will be held on February 8th at 6:00pm.  We encourage all junior parents to attend and will be discussing the college planning process for juniors and their families which formally begins second semester.

Seniors

All seniors and parents should be receiving the Senior Newsletter each week via student BHHS email accounts and registered parent email accounts. The Senior newsletter publishes important information for seniors, including college representative visits (also listed on Naviance), and up to date scholarship opportunities that have been very beneficial to many of our young men who have applied for them. If you are not receiving this email, please contact Mrs. Collamati at kcollamati@hendricken.com.

*Senior College Application Procedure Reminders

  • Seniors create a Common Application Account and link it to Naviance account
  • When seniors request letters of recommendation from a teacher, they must provide a completed blue form to the teacher at the time of request.
  • Seniors request academic credentials (transcripts +) to be sent to colleges by submitting the completed yellow form to their counselor after the Common Application and Naviance accounts have been linked.
  • Students and parents should allow a minimum of one week from time of request to send academic credentials to a college by a particular date.
  • Please note that First Quarter grades are sent to any college to which anyone has applied through the close of business on Thursday, November 9th.These grades will accompany all future requests to send academic credentials beginning Wednesday, November 15th.

Basketball knocks off North Kingstown in JV and Varsity play on Monday night

Photo from William Geoghegan, The Independent

WARWICK, RI – The Hawks remained perfect in RIIL play on Monday evening with a 58-47 win over the North Kingstown Skippers in a packed and raucous Pepin Gym. With the win, Hendricken’s Varsity team improves to a perfect 10-0 in league play.

North Kingstown proved to be a handful from tip-off, leading Coach Jamal Gomes’ team for the majority of the first half. Despite a slow start, Hendricken began to dominate in the final minutes of the first, going on a 12-point run, and allowing no points by the Skippers to bring a 27-22 lead into half-time.

After an early second-half run by the Hawks, North Kingstown responded with a 7-0 run of their own to bring the score to 39-36. Following back-and-forth play from both teams, the Green and Gold went on their second 12-0 run of the game, a lead that the Skippers would never be able to minimize.

Prior to the Varsity showdown, Hendricken and North Kingstown’s JV squads battled to a 64-62 shootout in favor of the Hawks.

Hendricken’s JV and Varsity teams take on the South Kingstown Rebels on Wednesday, January 24 in Wakefield at 6pm. The Rebels’ Varsity team sits at 3rd in the RIIL standings with a 9-2 record.

The Hawks and Skippers meet again for their final match-up of the regular season on Monday, February 5 at 7pm in North Kingstown.

Ray Bradbury’s classic plays Bishop Hendricken this weekend

WARWICK, RI – The Arts at Bishop Hendricken proudly presents Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 as its 2018 Winter production playing the Dr. Daniel S. Harrop Theater on the Bishop Hendricken campus from March 9-11.

The production will feature a three-show run, with performances on Friday and Saturday at 7pm, and Sunday at 2pm. Tickets are $12 for students and seniors, and $15 for adults. Tickets are available for purchase online at:www.hendricken.com/boxoffice. Tickets can also be purchased by calling: 401.739.3450, ext. 120. The Box Office will be open for ticket sales two hours prior to each performance.

Based on the 1953 award-winning novel about censorship and free thought, Fahrenheit 451 explores a dystopian American society of the future in which books are outlawed, and it is the duty of firefighters to burn them. When fireman Guy Montag begins to question the status quo, he finds himself in a dangerous and highly combustible situation in which he must choose between continuing his nonexistent existence, or risking everything for the right to think.

Fahrenheit 451 is a piece that we’ve often seen explored on the page in English classes, but never breathed to life onstage,” said Richard Sylvia, Director of Arts. “This is a piece of paramount importance given its themes of free thought, healthy skepticism, and fighting for what’s right. Our students have not only met the challenge of tackling these multidimensional characters and this complex plot, but also have taken the text’s messages to heart.”

The production, directed by Richard Sylvia, features a company of 43 student actors and technicians from various Catholic, public and private schools from around Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

The Hawks down Mt. Pleasant in a thriller at the Ryan Center

KINGSTON, RI – Bishop Hendricken proudly captured its 3rd consecutive RI state basketball championship, the program’s 17th, with a thrilling come-from-behind victory over the Mt. Pleasant Kilties, 69-61, on Sunday night at the Ryan Center (University of Rhode Island). Highlighted by stellar performances from Angel Sanchez, Tyrone “TJ” Weeks, and company, the Hawks reversed an 11-point deficit at the half to rally strongly and definitively in the second, outscoring the Kilties 47-28.

From tip-off, the Hawks and Kilties traded baskets early and often. But, Mt. Pleasant would seemingly begin run away with the game, widening its lead to an 11-point margin for the better half of the first frame. In an attempt to keep up, the Hawks added tallies of their own, but would have to settle for a 33-22 score in favor of the Kilties at halftime.

But, Coach Jamal Gomes’ squad would come alive in a big way.

Invigorated by a raucous Green and Gold crowd on hand at the Ryan Center, Hendricken quickly rallied to cut into the Mt. Pleasant lead. Driven by nearly air-tight defense, the Hawks held the Kilties to an early second half scoring drought, allowing themselves to come within a point. Despite a strong Kilties’ response, Hendricken would continue to turn defense into offense, causing turnovers and scooping up rebounds to force transition.

Bolstered by key buckets from Angel Sanchez, TJ Weeks, and Bobby Fiorito, the Hawks evened the score, then ran away with the game. Hendricken held Mt. Pleasant to another scoring drought in the latter part of the second half, then added insurance of its own to seal the state crown, 69-61.

Angel Sanchez sank several 3-pointers that fired up Hawks fans and rallied the team in the second half. Sanchez tallied 17 points on the night and was named Played of the Game. TJ Weeks, an offensive and defensive stalwart all season for the Hawks, led Hendricken’s charge with 20 points of his own. Bobby Fiorito and Andre De Los Santos notched their own double-digit tallies, scoring 12 and 10 points respectively.

The 2018 championship is third consecutive for Hendricken, and the 11th under Coach Gomes’ tenure. Previously, Gomes led the Hawks to seven consecutive state championships from 2004-2010, as well as a win in 2014.

Congratulations to Coach Gomes, Coach Bob Stephenson, Coach Brett Kearns, Coach D.J. Carcieri ’05, the team staff, and the boys on another state title!
