Will Blackmon returns to Hendricken to Host Youth Football Camp

Washington Redskins defensive back and Hendricken alum, Will Blackmon ’02 returned to his alma mater on Saturday afternoon, when he hosted his Second Annual FUNdamentals Youth Football Camp in conjuncation with USA Football at Bishop Hendricken. Sponsors included Gilbane Construction, Gray Matter Marketing, Say Cheese, The Thirsty Beaver and BODYARMOR SuperDrink.

Over 225 kids attended the camp that took place on Herrick Field at Hayden Stadium and was broken down into two separate sessions, morning and afternoon. 50 or 60 kids ages 11-14 took part in the afternoon session. More than 100 kids ages 7-10 attended the morning session.

The camp taught football fundamentals such as passing, catching and running in a non-contact setting. Blackmon and his fellow followed USA Football’s Player Progression Development Model to ensure that the kids were learning in an age-appropriate manner.

Instructor’s included many former college and NFL players, including Jamie Silva (East Providence/Boston College/Former Indianapolis Colt), Bobby Sewall (Portsmouth/Brown University/Retired NFL Wide Receiver with Tennessee Titans), Liam Coen (La Salle/UMass/University of Maine Offensive Coordinator), Chancellor Logan (URI Assistant Coach) and Jordan Monk (St. Raphael/North Carolina State).

The former Hendricken all-stater and all-american at Boston College, Blackmon
is entering his 10th season in the NFL. He has played for the Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, Jacksonville Jaguars and now the Redskins. Blackmon won a Super Bowl with the Giants in 2012.

Held in part to the National Football League Foundation’s Youth Football Camp Grant, Blackmon hopes the camp can continue on an annual basis at Hendricken.

“I just wanted to have some kind of tradition here [at Hendricken] every year that the kids can look forward to. The main thing of course is that it is free and it is coming from a native Rhode Islander who made it to the professional level and is still playing at the professional level and I have been playing 10 years. It’s what I look forward to and I’m just so thankful.”

From Student to school President, Helping to Shape the Futures of Tomorrow’s Leaders
by Michael Cerio

John Jackson long ago lost track of how many times he’s walked the halls of Bishop Hendricken High School.  When the school’s 2015-16 academic year began in late August, it marked the 40th year on staff for the class of 1971 alumni, and his fifth as school president.  Yet, not a day goes by that Jackson doesn’t embrace the privilege bestowed upon him and his colleagues to help shape the futures of tomorrow’s leaders.

The Clift Family Legacy

Alumni parents Howard and Deb Clift began their relationship with Bishop Hendricken over a decade ago.  Their nephews, Matt ’05, Zach ’05 and Nick Reay ‘07, attended Hendricken and were very involved, Nick particularly in the arts.  Later the couple’s son, Howard III ’12, followed in Nick’s footsteps and made a name for himself in the arts program.

The Clifts witnessed the remarkable transformation of both their nephew and son under the talented influence of then Director of the Arts, Brian Cordiero.  Howard came into Hendricken as a shy, quiet kid and it was the arts program that allowed him to find his path and thrive.  “The Hendricken Arts Department was such a strong influence, so much so that Howard is now a music major at Salve Regina University,” said Deb.  It is our hope that others receive the same opportunity.  Hendricken is a great place for kids to grow and find themselves.”

“The Arts Academy is such a gem with so much untapped talent. So many shy kids blossom, my son included, and now he’s thriving in the arts at Salve.  Music is going to take him places,” she added.   Howard is expected to soon be inducted into a Holistic Leadership Program at Salve. The Clifts feel that Hendricken gave him the skills to excel and the confidence to pursue his dreams.

While at Hendricken, Howard became the top fundraiser for the Mission Peru House by soliciting donations and participating in phone-a-thons.  He even gave one of the Brothers his artwork, “Peace Dove,” that currently hangs in the house.  Howard singlehandedly raised $10,000 in addition to being the #1 calendar salesperson in each of his four years at Hendricken.

Young Howard received his gift for giving and helping others from his parents who were also instrumental in the addition of Hendricken’s science lab in 2010.  Simply put, Deb added “the boys were very interested in science and we recognized the need to build a new one.”

The Clifts have also long supported the band.  “We gave Mark McPhillips the duty of coming up with the percussion ensemble. By the time it was complete the ensemble was fantastic! It’s exactly what we wanted our son involved with. It became a family.”

And family is at their core.  Every year the Clifts host a picnic at McCauley House and the arts students help out by serving food and providing musical entertainment.  McCauley House is a meal site and house of hospitality for nearly 300 guests who, for various reasons, struggle to get by. The Clifts instilled the idea in the art students to use their talents and good will to help those less fortunate. “We are all about families helping families,” said Deb. “It’s not our motto, it’s our mission.”

Those words came to life when the Clifts began the Clift Family Scholarship, given to a member of the Arts Academy each year.  To date, three talented arts academy students have attended Hendricken thanks in large part to the Clift family who have lived out the mission of Bishop Hendricken and helped dozens of young men through the years.

The Clift’s generosity ranks them among Hendricken’s top donors.  It is with great gratitude that they continue to give long after their son has graduated, and it is our honor to call them family.

(Currently the Clifts have 3 more nephews in the hawk ranks: Joshua Clift ’15 and Cameron Clift ‘17.  Their younger brother, Nathan, plans to attend Hendricken soon.)

Sophomores Shine at St. Antoine’s Residence

“At first I was very nervous and I was actually a little scared.  At the end, I cannot describe what an amazing impact it made on me.”  So says Nicholas DiTusa, a sophomore, of his recent retreat experience in the Special Care Unit (SCU) at St. Antoine’s Residence in North Smithfield.  “I had a great day and wish I can go back soon.”

Nick and all of his classmates in the sophomore class will be sharing in a common retreat experience over the course of this academic year, what Christian Service Coordinator Mr. Stephen Crawford defines as a “service retreat.”  For a full school day, in small groups of 15 students, every sophomore will participate in a unique program created by Crawford and Lisa Schenck, the SCU program Director/Social Worker at St. Antoine’s.  (In an interesting coincidence, Schenck is the niece of former Hawk chaplain Fr. David Gaffney. )  The SCU at St. Antoine’s houses 60 residents who are dealing with Alzheimer’s Disease or deep dementia.  It is a secure unit whose residents are mostly female (there are currently four males) and primarily in their 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.

Upon arrival at St. Antoine’s the students are quickly introduced to the residents, some of whom are ushered or transported by the students to the site’s chapel for morning Mass.  A Catholic facility run by the Diocese, St. Antoine’s celebrates Mass every day for its residents and staff.  After Mass, the students return to the SCU for a morning of activities.  Partnered with a resident, the students help the staff organize and run two simultaneous activities.  A typical day might include an arts-and-crafts session and a dance, and each student participates in both activities.  The main meal of the day is served at lunch time, and the students assist the staff in delivering and preparing the meal for each resident.  After lunch the students are debriefed on the day’s experience by Ms. Schenck and her terrific staff, and the students are educated on the challenges of aging, dementia, and Alzheimer’s Disease.

“All of our students are required to perform at least 25 hours of service each year, and they do a great job of it” says Mr. Crawford.  “But to make that service truly Christian service, to find a venue that would ensure that every graduate of this school had at least one face-to-face encounter with a marginalized population of people was a challenge.  That’s when this partnership with St. Antoine’s came to fruition, and it has been terrific!  This experience really challenges our young men, stretches them, grows them in ways that are so important.  To see them dancing and singing with these special people, bringing joy to their faces, is an incredibly rewarding and gratifying experience.”

Sam Hines, a sophomore who attended his retreat in October, remembers the experience as an example of meeting the challenge of Christ:  “For I was hungry and you gave me to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in” (Mt: 25).  Hines reflected that “these residents were strangers to us, and by helping them in their time of need we were helping Jesus.”  Chad Doorley was more succinct in his assessment:  “Today, I received much more than I gave.”  Another sophomore, Steve Huang, called the retreat “a very unique, precious and meaningful experience.  A trip like this is going to be beneficial for my entire life.”

“All of us know someone afflicted with Alzheimer’s Disease” says Crawford.  “It is always fatal.  It has no cure to date.  And as our human population lives longer and longer lives the incidence of dementia and Alzheimer’s will continue to grow.  I hope this experience shakes our kids a little bit, makes them more inclined to go visit an elderly grandparent or relative, to be more comfortable in that experience.  This is real life, and as Christians we have a moral imperative to serve these challenged people, to love them and bring them dignity.  And that’s what these sophomores are doing.”

Bob Preston ’76

National Volunteer of the Year

By Thomas Harkins ‘76

Recently, it was my pleasure to have lunch and an enriching conversation with classmate Bob Preston ’76.  Bob’s brothers Bill ’71 and Brad ’79 also graduated from Bishop Hendricken as did his son Dan Preston ’01.  A board member on the American Parkinson’s Disease (PD) Association, Bob was recently named the National Volunteer of the Year for that organization.  His involvement and commitment to actively fighting PD is a story that is both inspiring and compelling.

Bob was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD) in 2007 at age 48.  Since then, he has fought the disease with every ounce of his being as a fundraiser, spokesman, and supreme optimist.  In 2008, Bob and Bill sold the Preston Insurance Agency which they had grown into a major player in the Rhode Island insurance market.  Bob has actively taken up the cause of helping those with PD by creating and funding a program that helps PD patients seek complimentary care such as yoga, acupuncture, massage, tai chi, and other beneficial therapies.  In 2011, as an avid and accomplished sailor, Bob and Becky Preston took their boat “Family Ties” from Maine to Florida and the Bahamas on what they named the “Optimism Can Take You Anywhere” tour.  He repeated the same trip in 2013 and will do it again in 2016 leaving Wickford on July 27th the 9th anniversary of his diagnosis for what will be a 10,000 mile cruise. These trips helped Bob raise over $400,000 to date and are designed to promote awareness of Parkinson’s Disease, its effect on 1,900,000 Americans as well as demonstrate the power of a positive attitude in fighting ANY chronic illness.

Bob, a former Hendricken board member, is one of many members of the Class of ’76 who have remained connected to the school.  I asked Bob how his years at Hendricken prepared him for his current life circumstances, a life that he will not let be defined by the disease.  “It’s all how you approach life.  Brothers’ Loftus, Maus, and Sheehan always taught us to live our lives with purpose.  I really believe that my life is part of His plan, put in this position for a reason and I’ll continue to work as hard as ever to execute His plan.”

Most recently, Bob has taken up boxing three times per week as clinical research has proven the value of rapid and repeated muscle movements for those with PD.  He is now actively involved with Rock Steady Boxing, a program specifically designed for Parkinson patients and is volunteering his time to promote and expand the boxing program throughout the region.  But it’s Bob’s supreme optimism and spirituality that is most impressive.  As he says: “Whatever the disease or malady, don’t let it define you, it’s immeasurable how much a positive attitude and optimistic outlook can impact your health.”

Bob Preston ’76 is always interested in being a resource and support to others with Parkinson’s.  He can be reached at (401) 575-2004 or at RHPreston1@gmail.com.
